Conundrum: Venngarry Venn Ross

In a Venn Diagram puzzle, there are three overlapping circles, marked A, B, and C. Each circle has a different rule about who or what can go inside. The challenge is to guess the rule for each circle. You can find a more detailed explanation of Venn Diagram puzzles, along with an example, here.

Last week, Conundrum moved from movies to television. This week, it returns to its roots in legit theatre. Each of the eight titles below refers to a stage play.

Have you figured out one of the rules? Two? All three? Feel free to post whatever you’ve got in the comments below. Just tell us which circle you’re solving, and what the rule is.

As an extra bit of fun, once the puzzle is solved, let’s see if we can add to the list of plays that belong inside Circle B.

Enjoy!

UPDATE: Circle A solved by DeLisa. Circle B solved by Annalisa. See comments for all answers.

  1. DeLisa Says:

Well A is obviously Chekov, no?

  2. Bill Says:

    A is Chekhov, yes!

Though what’s obvious to some may not be obvious to all.

    One down, two to go.

  3. DeLisa Says:

Circle C – plays that have been adapted into movies?

  4. Annalisa Says:

Circle B – all include names of family members

  5. Bill Says:

    Correct for Circle B!

As for Circle C, it’s a good guess, but this would also be true of titles outside the circle.

  6. Bill Says:

Now that it’s solved, can anyone name other play titles that would go inside Circle B?

  7. DeLisa Says:

    Mother Courage

  8. Bill Says:

Oh, that’s a good one. I could have used that instead of ‘night, Mother, since it would fit inside Circle C as well.

Hey, there’s a thought. If anyone has a play title that fits inside Circle B, I’ll tell you if it fits inside Circle C.

Circle C is tricky, so this might be a more fun way to play it.

  9. DeLisa Says:

From Annalisa: They deal with death?
From DeLisa: the END with a death? Or have a titular death?

  10. Bill Says:

    No to all three.

The Seagull ends with a death. I don’t believe the Cherry Orchard does. Well, not a literal one, anyway. Chekhov is depressing.

Anyway, it’s not death-related. It’s also not directly related to plot, characters, or theme.

  11. Bill Says:

Circle C contains plays from the 20th century.
