Conundrum: Pic Tac Toe IV

In a “Pic Tac Toe” puzzle, there are nine pictures in a three-by-three grid, like Tic-Tac-Toe. In each row, column, and diagonal, there is a common theme that unites the three pictures. The challenge is to find the eight themes.

You can click on each image to see a larger version:

NOTE: Pictures 4 and 6 carry a watermark from iStockphoto. This is not part of the puzzle.

Please post whatever you come up with in the comments section.

Enjoy!

UPDATE: Correct themes provided by Neel Mehta (1) and Annalisa (6). See comments for all answers.

Feeling somewhat inspired, I created a Pic-Tac-Toe over on my site.

As for yours, I can’t figure out the top row (strength?), but I think I know the rest. My answer to the bottom row is a little sketchy (the foliage in the aquarium photo throws me off).

  2. Neel Mehta Says:

Still no Annalisa? Okay, some thoughts on the top and bottom rows.

Top row: Am I right in guessing that picture 1 is of gunpowder, picture 2 a marlin? Don’t know much about these things, never having read Melissa Bank.

And again with the 1 lb. item? All my guesses are of the pound/heavy/strength/gun variety. There has to be a reason you opted for a “Think Different” ad of Muhammad Ali as opposed to, say, Albert Einstein.

Bottom row: At first I thought the answer was BUSH — background bushes in pic 7, President Bush in pic 9 — but I don’t think you can argue for bushes in an aquarium. Maybe GREENERY in general?

By the way, kudos on pic 7. If I’m right, I think an image of William Tell may have worked just as well, but the pug is way funnier.

  3. Bill Says:

GREENERY in general is correct for the bottom row.

Don’t overthink the top row. It’s just as general.

I also noticed the 1 lb. item, but it’s not relevant here. Neither is marlin or what exactly that is in the container in Picture 1.

  4. Annalisa Says:

    Hey, gents- just logging in!

    Here’s what I’ve got:
    Column 1 Targets
    Column 2 Fish
    Column 3 B&W? (hahaha)
    159 Diag 41
    357 Diag Apple
    Row 1 **I’m stumped, too…but I’ll keep trying!**
    Row 2 Lock
    Row 3 Greenery

  5. Annalisa Says:

Row 1: Black (bottle, marlin, person)

  6. Neel Mehta Says:

Yeah, Annalisa, that’s what I got. For the right column, Bill might want us to say B&W photography.

Your guess for the top row is about as good as anything I can come up with. As always, the 1-lb item is the problem. Bare knuckles? Heavy fish and heavyweight? Pic 1 doesn’t seem to have any of that.

  7. Bill Says:

All correct except for the top row. I thought that would be an easy one. It’s nothing clever – just a very broad category.

I won’t leave you hanging. If nobody solves it, I’ll post the answer tomorrow. The payoff isn’t big enough to string you along for a week.

Well done on the rest of them!

And yeah, the pug dog was not necessary, but it was too cool not to keep. The bottom row was originally going to be dogs, but I couldn’t find a picture of Poppy and Millie together, if you can believe that.

  8. Neel Mehta Says:

    Brainstorm!

Is the top row HAND (handgun, handful, hand balled into a fist)? If not, then I give up.

  9. Annalisa Says:

    Or how about POWER?

  10. Bill Says:

The top row is SPORTING ACTIVITIES/PASTIMES (Shooting, Fishing, Boxing)

  11. Neel Mehta Says:

Hmm. I feel like we should’ve gotten that at some point.

  12. Bill Says:

    Hidden in plain sight, perhaps.
