Question of the Week

Via the Shakespeare Geek we learn that Kenneth Branagh is to direct Thor:

In a departure from his normal cerebral choices for directing, it seems British actor and film-maker Kenneth Branagh has decided to take on something a little less complex, the Marvel Studios version of “Thor”. “Thor” is based on the well known German/Norse God of Thunder, but in the Marvel Universe and prospective film, he has an alter-ego, a disabled medical student called Donald Blake, which makes the god have a more human/vulnerable side than some superheroes. The film has a scheduled released date of 2010.

We all have to eat. On to the Question of the Week!

Which Shakespearean role would you cast with which superhero (or super villain) and why?

I’ll get the ball rolling by casting The Flash as Puck. Who else could “put a girdle round about the earth/ In forty minutes”?

Enjoy!

  1. A.K.Farrar Says:

    Superman as Hal/Henry V

With Batman in the same production as Hotspur?

What to do with Robin (although surely he is Robin …i.e Puck?)? Maybe dress him in women’s clothes and have him as Hotspur’s wife?

    Penguin as Falstaff?

  2. Sal4Now Says:

In the 1980’s most famous Marvel comics storyline, a noble-hearted X-man (Phoenix) is corrupted into a mass murderer (Dark Phoenix) The culprit is the mentally manipulative mutant, Mastermind a.k.a. Jason Wyngarde. This villian would even give the good Mr. Branagh a run for his money as the morally bankrupt Iago.

  3. Bill Says:

…perhaps with Phoenix as the noble-hearted Othello who is also corrupted into being a murderer.

  4. DeLisa Says:

    Wonder Woman as Cleopatra

  5. Bill Says:

An excellent choice. I wonder who could play her Antony. Aquaman? And then Superman gets angry at his continuing absence from the Justice League and his abandoning his political marriage to Supergirl…

“Sal4Now” and I were talking yesterday, and between his encyclopedic knowledge of comic book characters and my penchant for matters Shakespearean, we came up with disfigured Machiavellian tyrant Dr. Doom as disfigured Machiavellian tyrant Richard III.

Truly, this is an unexplored area of scholarly thought. Or is it?
