That makes sense. The first episode of Season Two really was just a wrapping up of Season One and a set up for events to come. The first episode of Season One, now that I think of it, really was a prelude to the action more than it was a part of it. I can see this episode (3.1) in that context.

Not to say that the three episodes weren’t great, but this series does seem to follow a five-act structure each season, with the first episode as prologue.

Now, William Shatner as King Lear - that had potential.

It’s nearly Sunday! Well…not quite.

I do like this episode a lot - we see the beginning of the amazing chemistry between Charles and Geoffrey, which is the highlight of the entire season for me, although it is the second episode when we are introduced to the main themes of the season. Amazing stuff.

So, the New Burbage has become a huge success, with Macbeth on Broadway and our boys on the cover of Canadian Business. But it’s a divided kingdom, with Geoffrey and Richard each handling success in their own dysfunctional ways, and a possible power struggle on the horizon. (Richard: “Canadian Business! I used to dream of this. Of course, in my dream, it was just me, but still…”) In the opener, Geoffrey gives Richard some of his authority, and we know that’s never caused anybody trouble before.

Let’s go back to my pre-episode questions:

Will Geoffrey and Ellen end up together?

So far, so good, but I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Chris. (”Barbara, call me. That sounds so trite. But call me.”)

Who will be the new cast members?

Charles is fantastic! I loved his first scene with Geoffrey. We don’t know much about Barbara yet, though the photographs on her wall make me think she’s an action star like Jack, or maybe a regular on a television cop show. The production team has promise, especially the guy who was arguing for thumbs over spoons. Geoffrey went with thumbs, and it’s too bad, because Charles could have used the spoons!

What will happen to Oliver?

So far just a dream sequence, but it’s enough to let us know the actor’s still in the cast, so Geoffrey can expect a visit. The next episode is titled “Vex Not His Ghost,” so I’m guessing it will be soon.

Who will screw with Richard’s head this season

So far it looks like Richard is screwing with his own head. I doubt we’ll see Melinda again, but who knows?

And most importantly, will there actually be a King Lear-based theme song?

Oh yes indeedy. And it’s my favorite of the three songs.
