{"id":6635,"date":"2018-07-07T18:36:23","date_gmt":"2018-07-07T23:36:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shakespeareteacher.com\/blog\/?p=6635"},"modified":"2018-07-07T18:47:59","modified_gmt":"2018-07-07T23:47:59","slug":"shakespeare-anagram-coriolanus-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shakespeareteacher.com\/blog\/archives\/6635","title":{"rendered":"Shakespeare Anagram: Coriolanus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, the AP <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2KCZEzr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that a number of immigrants who joined the US military as part of a special program are being abruptly discharged.<\/p>\n<p>The program is called MAVNI (Military Accessions Vital to National Interest) and it allows for non-citizens to enter our armed services\u00a0if they fill gaps that we urgently need, such as foreign languages or medical skills. In the process, they may become citizens. It sounds like a win-win to me, and indeed the program has been highly successful, enjoying support from both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>But as the New York Times\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/06\/us\/army-immigrants-discharge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describes it<\/a>, some of these\u00a0valuable specialists are now &#8220;being cut even as the Army has been unable to meet its 2018 recruiting goals.&#8221; Some are even in danger of being deported.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Stock, the former West Point law professor who won a MacArthur fellowship for, among other things, leading\u00a0the development of the MAVNI program, <a href=\"https:\/\/wapo.st\/2m636El\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">estimated<\/a> in September that hundreds of recruits could be affected by this policy shift:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a dumpster fire ruining people\u2019s lives. The magnitude of incompetence is beyond belief,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have a war going on. We need these people.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These are not Trump\u2019s rapists and murderers pouring in from Mexico. They are not drug runners smuggling contraband from Central America. They are not even the dangerous PG-13 gang members <a href=\"https:\/\/wapo.st\/2MWLsOp\" target=\"_blank\">who are still being held in cages<\/a> at the border. \u00a0These are people who are here legally, who we <em>asked<\/em> to be here, and who trusted our word that they would be protected.<\/p>\n<p>All of the pretenses for why we need aggressive immigration reform have now been dropped. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From <em>Coriolanus<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Have the power still<br \/>\nTo banish your defenders<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Shift around the letters, and it becomes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They prove unfit leaders who ban the soldiers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, the AP reported that a number of immigrants who joined the US military as part of a special program are being abruptly discharged.
