About Me

My name is Bill Heller, and welcome to my personal website! This is a space where I can share my writing and other projects with like-minded folks from across the Internet. I hope you enjoy yourself while you're here!

I work as a consultant in New York City schools. When I started this site in January 2007, I took the blogger handle "Shakespeare Teacher" because I thought the name did a good job of summing up who I am and what I'm about. Here are some of the things I've done in the Shakespeare Teacher world:

  • Taught Shakespeare units and facilitated student projects in schools over many years, including stage productions, animations, and video.

  • Taught English Education graduate courses at NYU from 1997 - 2014, including two courses specifically about teaching Shakespeare.

  • Earned a Ph.D. in 2005, with a dissertation on teaching Shakespeare.

  • Served on the faculty for the Folger Shakespeare Library's summer Teaching Shakespeare Institute in 2007.

  • Published a book chapter on teaching Shakespeare in 2010.

  • Served as a member of an Educational Advisory Board for the PBS documentry Shakespeare Uncovered in 2012, consulting on and creating classroom materials for the program website.

  • Served as a "Shakespeare Expert" on a Shakespeare-themed Celebrity Cruise in 2016, giving four talks onboard the ship and escorting shore excursions to Shakespeare-related destinations.
