Six Degrees of Sir Francis Bacon: Sir Karl Popper

First, read the rules of the game.

This week’s challenge is science philosopher Sir Karl Popper.

I was able to link Sir Karl Popper to Sir Francis Bacon in six degrees or fewer, though that shouldn’t stop you from posting a longer response, or looking for a shorter one. Entries will be accepted until midnight on Thursday, October 25.

Good luck!

And congratulations to DeLisa for winning last week’s challenge by linking Benjamin Franklin to Sir Francis Bacon in a record two degrees:

Benjamin Franklin > Thomas Jefferson > Sir Francis Bacon

Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers along with Thomas Jefferson, who was heavily influenced by Sir Francis Bacon.

Just so you know, I have tried to do this.

Sir Karl Popper > Bertrand Russell > Queen Victoria…

Stupid British royals! Please don’t make me go back there.

  2. Bill Says:

Just so you know, Bertrand Russell can be linked to Sir Francis Bacon in two degrees.

The interposing individual is neither British nor royal. Discuss.

  3. Neel Mehta Says:

Well, with that bit of direction…

Sir Karl Popper > Bertrand Russell > Baruch Spinoza > Sir Francis Bacon

I don’t know if that last step should count. On the Spinoza page, Bacon appears only in the blue bio column on the right, and not in the text.

I’ve figured out why I’m not very good at this particular puzzle. I’m excellent with the Kevin Bacon version because I can reverse engineer to a small extent and make the chain quickly and as short as possible. In other words, I tend to gather a group of similarly prolific actors who have worked with Bacon at least once, so that “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” becomes “Five Degrees of Jack Lemmon, Laurence Fishburne, Matt Dillon, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Jack Nicholson, Peter Riegert, John Lithgow, etc.” Plus I know Hollywood better than Wikipedia.

I’ve resisted it thus far, but I may have to use the “What Links Here” option and create a penultimate stable of names for Francis as well. Feels like cheating, though.

  4. Bill Says:

I don’t think that’s cheating. For too long, this game has been Five Degrees of William Shakespeare, so if you can find a better way, more power to you. And it won’t be a wasted effort – you may learn a lot about history, philosphy, science, and politics while you’re at it.

Anyway, I can’t accept Spinoza > Bacon for the reason you suspected – links within boxes are off limits according to the rules. But, to quote Yoda, “There is another.”

  5. Neel Mehta Says:

Sir Karl Popper > Bertrand Russell > Georg Cantor > Sir Francis Bacon

Well, cheating or not, it’s less fun. The meandering is part of the enjoyment (if surfing through Wikipedia can be considered enjoyable). I suppose it helps to know that Thomas Jefferson, William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Queen Elizabeth I, and now Georg Cantor are valuable in the search process.

But, to quote Yoda, “There is another.”

A more interesting find, at least to me:

Sir Karl Popper > Albert Einstein > Yoda

  6. Bill Says:

Georg Cantor is correct. If there’s a shorter solution than that, I don’t know it.

But the Einstein/Yoda connection was new information for me, so I thank you.
