Hah! Pure fans _do_ feel let down. At least this one does.
Prospero explains what he’s going to do, and then he does it. The suspense!
(Oh, and some guy has to chop firewood for an afternoon. The suffering! I think Prospero just did that because Caliban had run off before putting the kettle on.)

Welcome, A.K. Farrar! Bringing additional information and new perspectives never spoils this party.
It probably wasn’t his last play, but he may have thought it was when he wrote it.
And not everyone agrees that this speech is his farewell to the theatre either, but I have trouble reading it any other way.
I’m looking forward to learning more about the established chronology by following your quest to read the Complete Works in order.
